What Kind of a Fortune Is This?

I was on my own for dinner last night, so went to an Asian restaurant that I sometimes go to. I ordered my standard meal there – the “Eleven B” – and it was fine as usual. And at the end, as usual, the waiter brought the check and a fortune cookie. Now, I’ve always found fortune cookies extremely disappointing because they have so much potential, but they always seem to fall so short. They’re usually trite and meaningless, and well, they’re usually not a fortune at all. But this is what my fortune said last night:

Consolidate your interest while the lights are active.

Juhbuh? What the hell does that mean? What interest? What lights, and just how are they active? I don’t appreciate cookies that mess with my mind, and this one did. If you have a clue what it means, let me know.

The experience did remind me, however, that I used to think it’d be fun to open my own fortune cookie company, ‘cause I think I could come up with all sorts of good ones. Now here’s an example, right off the top of my head: Your breasts are musical. Learn to play them and you’ll achieve great fame. Now wouldn’t that be a much better fortune than consolidate your interest while the lights are active. Of course it would be.

Mary Travers passed away a few days ago. She was a major voice for a whole generation. For Our Duncan Funk Song of the Day, here she is singing what I think has to be one of the best songs ever written.
