Sexual Pleasantries

Dear Duncan: I like to think of myself as being very socially aware and "with it," but there's something I've never been quite sure about. When you run into someone you know, but not real well - you know, like maybe waiting at a bus stop, or sharing an elevator, or standing next to each other in the grocery store check-out line - what is the expectation when it comes to exchanging sexual pleasantries with that person? What exactly is the rule of thumb in this situation? I'm unsure.

Dear Unsure: Oh, this can be awkward, that's for sure! I don't think there's necessarily an expectation that you'll exchange sexual pleasantries with someone in this situation, but of course doing so would only be considered polite - and that's always in good taste! I'm a little mystified about your reference to the so-called "rule of thumb" in this situation. I'm not aware of any such rule, and frankly, would be surprised if there was one since the thumb would rarely come into play in this context.

When I think of sexual pleasantries, I can't help but think how much I'd like to share an elevator with Norah Jones. And here she is with Our Duncan Funk Song of the Day.
