In Memoriam: Gar R. Arbuckle

My friend Gar’s grandfather passed away yesterday, or as Gar put it, "he went dead." Gar was pretty close to his grandfather so it was sad for him. But Gar comforted himself with the knowledge that his grandfather had lived a long, happy and, up until the end, healthy life. Gar said what he liked most about his grandfather was his sense of humor – he said, for example, that it was his grandfather who insisted that his obituary that was in today’s newspaper start out by saying Gar R. Arbuckle just up and died yesterday.

Gar was named after his grandfather. He’s never used the “R” before (which stands for Romulus), but he said he’s going to start doing so from now on as a way to keep his grandfather’s memory alive. I think that’s nice. So one Gar R. Arbuckle exits the stage, but another one enters. It’s like the circle of life.

Here’s a great “in memoriam” song for Our Duncan Funk Song of the Day. We featured a different studio version of this song way back in April, but I found this live version on YouTube, and it’s really great. Eva Cassidy was a great talent. For those who don’t know, she passed away from cancer in 1996 at age 33.

Title: Somewhere Over the Rainbow
