Sometimes Drama Unfolds Where and When You Don’t Expect It

But you have to keep your eyes open. I was reminded of this yesterday when I went out to breakfast. I ordered my typical going-out-to-eat breakfast of ham and eggs, toast, and country potatoes. I took my first bite of a small piece of ham and some egg, and that’s when the show began in earnest. Because I always order my eggs over-medium, as soon as I cut into it the yolk started to run across the plate. Instead of continuing on with eating, I decided just to watch for awhile. And what I saw was a fascinating interplay – delightful in its own way – between the slice of ham and the egg which was oozing yolk. Slowly but surely the egg matter was moving closer and closer to the ham. I could tell the ham was clearly showing signs of distress, almost edging towards the edge of the plate. (You had to watch really closely to see this.) The potatoes were off to the side, but keeping a wary eye on the proceedings. (The toast was on a separate plate, so wasn’t really involved.) I excitedly called the waitress over and filled her in on just what was happening on my plate. “Look at the potatoes,” I said, “look how they’re just sitting there waiting for something to happen.” But she was unable, or perhaps unwilling, to appreciate what was going on. But I appreciated it very much. And when I eventually became bored with watching, I just ate it all up.

Things are going on all the time, all around us people! Keep your eyes open.

Oh, oh, oh, do I have a treat for you today. THREE Duncan Funk Songs of the Day! I went to see James Taylor and Carole King last night, and it was a really fine show. So we’re doing a little “then and now” today. The first two songs below are two of the real biggies from way back when, and the third is from the Letterman show at the start of their current tour. Seriously, how sweet is this?

You’ve Got a Friend – James Taylor (with Carole King playing piano)
So Far Away – Carole King (with James Taylor playing guitar)
You Make Me Feel / How Sweet It is – James Taylor and Carol King
