It’s Nice To Be Able to Amuse Yourself
[Originally Appeared September 8th, 2009.]
So this is a true story, from yesterday. It was a pretty gloomy day, weather-wise. I had been sitting in the living room reading a book, a big-ole hard cover version of The Host by Stephenie Meyer. Vulva had been out shopping, but after returning came into the living room and sat down. I put the book down in my lap, and we starting talking about her shopping and what we might want to do for the rest of the gloomy afternoon.
Vulva had just started saying something – I’m not really sure what – when out of the blue, totally spontaneously and without any forethought on my part, something compelled me to interrupt her by loudly knocking four or five times on the book in my lap, and then saying in a happy, excited voice, “somebody’s at the book!” Now, there were only two of us there, and one of us – that would be me – found this to be incredibly hilarious, just the absolute stupidity and absurdity of it. The other one of us – that would be Vulva – found it mildly amusing. But that mild amusement began to diminish the longer I kept giggling about it, which probably did go on a little too long.
I mean, frankly, I thought it was pretty funny as it was. But the reason I couldn’t help giggling about it was thinking of other situations where doing and saying the same thing would be particularly inappropriate, like being in a job interview, or meeting your girlfriend’s parents for the first time, or being a businessman meeting with an important client. What a way to make an impression!

Our Duncan Funk Song of the Day is also a rerun, but it’s appropriate.
