Jimmy Crack Corn

I’ve always been a huge fan of Gary Larson’s The Far Side. One of my favorite of his cartoons – the one that I think took the cake for total bizarreness (and that’s really saying something!) – was set in an old western saloon. There was an alien creature, clearly identified as such by his numerous holes that made him look like a walking Swiss cheese, holding some kind of a ray gun that had wisps of smoke coming out of its barrel, and on the floor in front of him was a smoking pile of ashes. And there was an old prospector sort who was saying to the Sheriff: ‘twern’t the alien’s fault Sheriff, old Jeb Holloway kept sticking his head into one of the critter’s orifices, yelling “jimmy crack corn, jimmy crack corn.”

I was reminded of this earlier this morning when I saw what looked to be a big slice of Swiss cheese walking down the street. It turned out it was just Barb Arbuckle, Gar’s mom, wearing a bright yellow polka dot dress. I thought it might be fun to run up to her and then lean down to her stomach and yell into one of her dots “jimmy crack corn, jimmy crack corn,” but I figured she probably wouldn’t understand.

  1. That's my favorite far side comic as well. I've been looking for it for years do you know where I can find it?

  2. Well, for years it was taped to my refrigerator, so that's probably why you couldn't find it. But it's not there anymore, and I'm not sure what happened to it. You might be able to find another copy in a book of his cartoons.
