Not All Advice Is Good Advice

Some time back I was looking through an online discussion board, one where people were asking for and giving advice on how to sell things. One guy who was presumably trying to be helpful – I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt here – laid out a whole long laundry list of do’s and don’ts for being successful. This was his Point # 6:

Next, give them a bargain and be considerate and slightly self-defecating.

Now I think one should always strive to be self-defecating – in fact, I don’t know any other way – but I’m not sure if it should come into play when you’re trying to sell something. I think there could be a definite downside. I suppose it’s possible he meant “self-deprecating.” Big difference.
