Have We Started Down the Road To Totalitarianism?

Totalitarianism is a word that’s increasingly been in the news lately, mostly in the context of “Tea Party” devotees, claiming that that’s what health care reform will lead to. Well, they’re full of what my mom used to call, “shit.”

But after this morning, I’m starting to have my own concerns, but mine relate to our so-called system of justice. I received a speeding ticket a few weeks ago, and I decided to go to court to fight it because of what I felt were legitimate extenuating circumstances; to wit: it was a beautiful spring day and after a long winter it just felt good to drive a little fast. When my case came up, I respectfully asked the judge if I could present my defense using the medium of interpretive dance. She brusquely said “no” and banged her gavel, nay hammer, on her desk. Assuming she must be joking, I began my opening argument with a splendid and graceful move that I had been practicing and that I call my “Ode to Spring Pirouette.” The judge banged her hammer again even louder, said she was doubling my fine, and had her bailiff escort me from the courtroom.

This was something I might have expected in Stalinist Russia, but here, in the USA? Is this how it starts? I hope not. But the seed of doubt has now been planted.
