Worst Morning Ever for Local Hawaiian Fish

Vulva and I have come to Maui for a week. This morning we were sitting on our balcony, or lanai, drinking coffee. It was before sunrise, but there was still plenty of light. Where we’re staying is right on the beach, with the water right below us. We watched an older man walking down the beach carrying a fishing pole, and he walked into the surf up to about his ankles, and cast his line out. Within thirty seconds it was obvious he had caught something, and he slowly reeled it in and he had about a 15 inch fish of some sort or another. He was clearly excited, and he turned around and held his fish up to the folks in the condo building who like Vulva and I were watching him. Good for him – he caught a fish. But then I started thinking about it from the fish’s perspective.

Ahh, another morning in paradise. Just like hundreds, if not thousands of mornings before. The water’s warm, the sun’s filtering through. I should probably go for a swim with the kids later on. Oh look, right up ahead, BREAKFAST! Yay. Uh oh, oh crap …. AHHhhhhhh. Good-bye kids.

Well, that’s nature for you.

We really like where we’re staying. That’s the island of Molokai in the picture, which we just took from our lanai. It’s about 15 miles across the water from us. If we turn our heads to the left just a little, we can see the island of Lanai. The first night we were here we were sitting out there having a drink, and we watched the sun set over the northern-most tip of Lanai. When I realized we were sitting on our lanai watching the sun set over Lanai, I JUST ABOUT SHIT!

We came to Maui so I could work. Specifically I wanted to come and really work on developing my ideas for the all new fantabulous Fox-Gnus.com. But it turns out that the sun, the surf, the palm trees, the tropical breezes, the mai tais and all the rest are a distraction. I thought I could hunker down and really accomplish stuff. But I’ve learned that Maui’s not for hunkering. So I guess all the development work will have to wait.

We’ve already had this as Our Duncan Funk Song of the Day once before, but we’re gonna have it again. ‘Cause I say so.
