Elroy Noyes

I hope I didn’t give anyone the wrong impression yesterday about my friend Roy’s dad, Elroy. If you remember, over dinner – when Roy was already feeling pretty bad- his dad asked him if it grossed him out to think of himself as the fruit of his loins. His dad didn’t know about the “Gina Lou fiasco,” and he was just trying to be funny…trying to cheer Roy up. (And I gotta admit, I thought it was a pretty funny question.). Roy’s dad really is pretty nice, and he’s funny too.

Roy said his dad was named for the little boy character in the cartoon series, The Jetsons. Roy said that when his dad was really young, he loved his name because it was famous. But as he got older, he started getting teased about it because, well, it’s “Elroy” for crying out loud. So as he got a little older he went through a phase where he’d tell people his name was Spanish, and it was a “tough guy” name, kind of like “El Capitan.” But that didn’t work mostly because he had red hair and freckles. Now I guess he really likes his name - he's even got a bumper sticker on his car that says Ask me about Elroy Noyes! I asked Roy once what his dad did, and he said he didn't have a clue. That's odd.

Well, I think I’ve milked this for more than it’s worth, so let’s move on!
