Now There's A Name For You

Up in the Northern Idaho panhandle, smack dab in the middle of God’s country, there’s a town called Athol. Athol, Idaho. Really!

According to Wikipedia, in the 2000 census the town had a population of 676. No doubt the vast majority of them are good, decent, salt-of-the-earth people. But presumably, through no fault of their own, they’re known collectively as just a bunch of Athols. I suppose they could be Atholians, but either way, it can’t be good.

What would possess someone to name a town Athol? In my mind I can picture a meeting of the town’s founders, mostly grizzled old men, probably back in the late 1800’s, and probably in the town saloon, and someone’s saying “well we got a town here, what are we gonna call it?” And in the back, there’s someone sitting with their legs crossed, and they’re raising their hand and waving it back and forth excitedly, and they’re saying “yoo-hoo, what about Athol?” And someone else says “hmmm, that’s not bad.” What would the runner-ups have been? Fecal City? Rectum?

Well, my heart goes out to the good people of Athol. Keep your chin up!

Time for Our Duncan Funk Song of the Day. I think this is one of the best Classic Rock songs of all time…and the album cover was one of the best and most memorable of all time too. But you never hear this song on the radio. Why is that? I have an inquiring mind, and I want to know ... and I bet the good people of Athol do too. Fortunately for you and them, you have me.
